Harford County Sheriff’s Office Detectives are investigating, and a 15-year-old boy is recovering, after an accidental shooting in Edgewood early Monday morning.
At approximately 12:38 a.m., deputies assigned to the Southern Precinct of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 800 block of W. Spring Meadow Court in Edgewood for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, deputies located a 15-year-old male, from Joppa, suffering from a single gunshot wound to the upper body. Deputies immediately rendered first aid until the arrival of medics. The victim was transported to the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Hospital for treatment of what is believed to be a non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation was assumed by detectives from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. Investigators from the Forensic Services Unit responded to the residence to collect and preserve physical evidence in support of the investigation.
Initial investigation indicates the victim was at a 14-year-old friend’s home in Edgewood when they located a gun in a closet within the residence. While the 14-year-old was handling the firearm, there was an accidental discharge of the weapon, and the 15-year-old was struck. The juveniles were at the residence alone at the time of the incident.
As a result of the investigation, the 14-year-old was charged as a juvenile with reckless endangerment and was released into the custody of a guardian.
