A man is dead after a crash Thursday afternoon in Harford County.

On July 27, 2023, at approximately 12:46 p.m., deputies assigned to the Northern Precinct of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene of a vehicle crash on Rt. 165 in the area of Furnace Road and Huntfield Way involving a Harford County dump truck and a passenger vehicle. The driver of the BMW 328i, identified as John Derwart, 78, of Fallston, was declared deceased on scene by medics.

Preliminary information gathered at the scene indicates the construction vehicle, driven by Scott Thommen, 54, of Delta was maneuvering around an active work zone at the intersections of Rt. 165, Furnace Road, and Huntfield Way. Derwart was traveling northbound on Rt. 165, through the intersection, when the two vehicles collided. No passengers were in the construction vehicle, while one passenger, Joan Bridges, 81 of Fallston was in the BMW. Bridges was taken to a local hospital as a precautionary measure.

Deputies assigned to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Crash Team responded to the scene to assume the investigation into the cause and circumstances of the crash. The investigation is active and ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.
