Detectives Investigating Edgewood Homicide

Harford County detectives are actively investigating the homicide of Gerald Wayne Champ of Edgewood.

On February 18, 2022, patrol deputies assigned to the Southern Precinct of the Harford County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 2300 block of Perry Avenue in Edgewood for the report of a person in cardiac arrest. Upon arrival, deputies located a male victim, identified as Gerald Wayne Champ, 71, in his residence deceased.

The investigation was assumed by detectives from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. Detectives canvased the area and searched for video evidence around Perry Court, in an effort to identify any witnesses, suspect(s) and/or a motive in the case. Investigators from the Forensic Services Unit responded to the area to collect and preserve physical evidence in support of the investigation. Mr. Champ’s body was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for an autopsy where it was determined he died from trauma to the upper body. Investigation indicates Mr. Champ was murdered between February 14, 2022, and when he was found on February 18, 2022. Over the weekend, detectives conducted multiple interviews and pursued a number of leads. The investigation has led detectives to believe this to be an isolated incident.

Detectives determined during the initial stages of the investigation that the victim’s faded grey 2003 Ford Explorer with MD registration – 09680HT had been stolen from the residence, possibly by those involved in the homicide (picture is attached).
